About the book

What drives people? Seven answers that changed the way we think about work.

This book grew out of César França’s doctoral research on the motivation of software engineers. To understand what makes the people who write software give their best, he had to go back to the foundations: the theories that, since the 1940s, have tried to explain why people commit, feel satisfied or give up.

The result is a concise and accessible reference, useful for students, researchers, managers and people professionals.

“Believe me, it was hard to elect only seven theories, among hundreds of other extremely interesting works.”
César França in the Foreword

Every chapter follows the same structure

  1. I

    The author

Who the researcher was and the context they worked in.

  2. II

    The origin

What problem the theory tried to solve and where it came from.

  3. III

    The core ideas

The constructs, the propositions and how they relate to each other.

  4. IV

    The criticisms

Empirical tests, limitations and what came next.

Chapter 1 · Abraham Maslow

Hierarchy of Needs

Human needs are arranged in a hierarchy: the most basic ones must be reasonably met before the higher ones gain strength.

What the critics say Hugely popular, but with little empirical support: studies never consistently confirmed the hierarchy.
